Creeping Creativity

Creativity creeps
under my skin
in an almost
random fashion
except for those
side steps
opening up doors
into nooks & crannies
filled with
Magenta &
Pthalo Blue

Gesso plastered
canvas tarps
fill in my gaps
so nothing that
isn’t meant to
be there
can infiltrate
or seep
or overflow
its boundaries

I determine
every brush
& stroke
& all deliberate acts
twist into
congealed
afterthoughts

It’s like watching
words escape
from silent mouths
in silent Black
& White movies:
each shade
of imaginary sound
is transformed
into translucent
Reds & Yellows

A diadem of jewels
to gush over
& revel in
its magnificence
with every
new idea

I like the transformation from black and white into color.

There is some kind of tension between the creeping creativity and randomness of ideas that is central here —

    I determine
    every brush
    & stroke
    & all deliberate acts
    of random
    forethought
    twist into
    congealed
    afterthoughts

This stanza seems central to me; it seems to be a turning point. The contrast between the almost arbitrariness of ideas and the way we order them is good — so much so that I’d almost like to see you do more with it. The piece moves from passive (creativity creeping) to active (I determine…) to passive again (watching), and I think there might be more to this. The phrase ‘deliberate acts of random forethought’ might need tweaking – just an idea.

I really like the last part, especially.

Thanks Michelle, I so love this type of response to a poem. You give me a window into your perception of my imagery. I love it! I think I have read this over and over…mulling it around, playing with additional water-coloured lines, removing this, adding that. I will think on it some more. I don’t really have plans when I write. I just go with the flow… Jx
