Introducing Mabel Honeycutt (III) – by Michelle McEwen
Mabel Honeycutt is a character who has yet to find a home in a story. So far, her story is told in snippets: some sound like poems, some sound like songs, some like diary entries. The story will come.
Mabel Honeycutt pt. 3 (Mabel & Sadie’s Man)
by Michelle McEwen
I keep catching Ike (Sadie’s man)
watchin’ me.
Sadie keeps catchin’ him, too.
Ike narrows his eyes
when he looks at me
like he is tryin’ to read me
but misplaced his glasses.
~ Mim

“Like he is trying to read me but misplaced his glasses.”
Ike is a no good man haaaaa.
Hahaha. Mabel says Ike isn’t too bad.
Mabel honey, you take it from an old man like me. Ike aint up to any good. A man what narrows his eyes when he’s looking at a woman is thinking of you know what. Best to stay clear of haystacks.
Sincerely,
Edna
Love it: “A man what narrows his eyes…” Sounds like a start of a story!!!
~ Mim
Mabel wants to know what exactly is meant by: “stay clear of the haystacks.” She (and I) like that phrase.
Eddie here if I can chime in. Back as a kid we used to visit Unca Ole’s farm out in Parsippany (used to be the joke “How do I get to Parsippany” Ans. “Just put a jug in fronta him, Par’ll do the rest”) Well the local teens, they told some mean adventures about forbidden delights in and behind those haystacks. So Ole’s neighbor Joe Thirsty had him a fine ol daughter named Bobby Sue Ann Southern Lights, so when I was walkin’ by those stacks, well her arm come grabbin’ outta one, and looks like Bobby Sue Ann got herself a needle. Now don’t tell Marzy any of this, she actually thinks she was my second (she knows about Sande – ‘nother story, Marzy is my 6th – oh 7 if you count that Chattanooga Choo-chew thing) because she’s 10 years older than me!”
Eddie
Ooh “Adventures about forbidden delights…”
Bobby Sue Ann– Nice!!! Hahahaha @ Marzy thinking she was your second. Good story stuff here in your comment Eddie. Love it! Chattanooga Choo-Chew– Eddie I’m about to still that as one of my AKAs. Would you mind? I’m just kidding, but I freakin’ love it!!!!
Oh and Mabel says she sure she has a girl-cousin somewheres named Bobby Sue Ann. (Is Southern Lights part of her name?)
Yeah – it was from her ma’s first two married names. Betsy Thirsty kept her names like Sadie better keep watching after Ike, and does Sadie trust Mabel anyway?
Full names: Betsy Princess Cheri LeMoyne Southern Lights Thirsty, so her daughter is Bobby Sue Ann LeMoyne Southern Lights Thirsty. Joe is just Joe. Joe Thirsty.
So Southern Lights is her last name?
Hahaha @ “Sadie better keep watching Ike”
Mabel says Sadie doesn’t trust her none, but they are sisters after all. Ike, though, is the type of man that can come between sisters.
Thirsty?
Well what kinda durn place is this, I hear name a my little Bobby Sue Ann – that’s her given, Lemoyne be Betsy’s first maiden name (got some Cajun’ in her she make a Ben-wa chew your socks off) an Southern some high falutin’ city writer her first husband and Frankie “Parlor” Lights her secund, then me Thirsty. We don’t put the Parlor in there cause that’s his nickname from hangin round pool halls.
Somebody said they seen my Bobby Sue Ann around these haystacks lookin’ for a needle? and a guy Eddie got one? If ya see her, tell her Ma’s got one in her sewin’ kit but you know Ma, she likes it in there.
Joe Thirsty, what you know about “durn”?
Hahaha @ “Ma’s got [a needle] in her sewing kit”
Love Frankie “Parlor”– nice!
Good story stuff, Joe. I might just have to use some of it in a story.
